Built-in tools (LocalToolRegistry)
Section titled “Built-in tools (LocalToolRegistry)”| Tool | Category | Danger (typical) | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
file_read | filesystem | safe/read | Read a file from the local filesystem. Returns line-numbered text. Supports line range slicing via start_line/end_line or offset/limit. |
file_write | filesystem | danger | Write content to a local file (full overwrite). Creates parent directories if needed. Prefer file_apply_patch for edits to files that already exist. |
file_apply_patch | filesystem | danger | Surgically edit an existing workspace file. Prefer this over file_write for changes to files that already exist — send a unique old_string plus new_string (Aider-style), or a unified diff / Morph Begin Patch in patch=. HITL danger-tier like file_write. |
file_apply_patch_set | filesystem | danger | Apply several surgical edits in one step (one HITL card). Each item is {path, old_string, new_string} or {path, patch}; a top-level path is the file of every patch that names none. Prefer this over N× file_apply_patch / file_write for a multi-file fix. Max 20 hunks. Failed hunks restore a workspace… |
file_append | filesystem | danger | Append content to the end of a local file. Creates the file and parent directories if needed. Use this to build LARGE files in chunks — one file_write to create, then file_append for each subsequent section — instead of one giant write that can exceed the model’s output limit. |
file_delete | filesystem | danger | Delete a file or directory. Directories are removed recursively. Restricted to the workspace. Danger-tier (requires HITL approval). |
file_list | filesystem | safe/read | List files and directories at a path. Returns names sorted alphabetically. |
request_path_access | filesystem | danger | Request permission to read or write a path OUTSIDE the active workspace. Requires human approval (HITL). On approve, grants session access to that folder (or parent of a file) so file_read/file_list/file_search (and write tools if mode=write) can use it. Prefer durable Extra folders in Settings for… |
file_search | filesystem | safe/read | Search for text inside files using regex. Returns matching lines with file paths and line numbers. |
codebase_search | filesystem | safe/read | Search the workspace codebase by symbol name and/or text. Uses a tree-sitter/regex definition index plus live ripgrep. Prefer this over file_search when looking for a function, class, or identifier. mode: auto | symbol | text. |
codebase_status | filesystem | safe/read | Codebase index health: files/symbols indexed, whether ripgrep and tree-sitter are available. Read-only. |
send_file | filesystem | danger | Send a file from the workspace to the user’s chat (Telegram/Discord/Slack), or show it in the web chat. Use this when the user asks for a file, document, PDF, or download. The file is delivered as an attachment alongside the text caption; in the web chat the result gives a line to put in your answe… |

Also: memory_admin action=invalidate id=… When the USER asks you to forget something they told you, pass forget_source_turn=true: the conversation turn the fact came from is forgotten too (as the Memo… |
memory_forget_mentions | memory | danger | WRITE: Forget EVERY memory of a conversation and every current fact that contains this exact text (any case, at least 4 characters). Use when the user asks to forget everything that mentions something (a codeword, a number, a name): memory_search shows only the best few matches, so forgetting its h… |

Swarm worker tools
Section titled “Swarm worker tools”A swarm worker offers these to its model itself, only while the swarm engine dispatches it; they are not in the registry, so the main agent, the MCP server and scheduled tasks never see them. | Tool | Category | Danger (typical) | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
handoff_to_worker | swarm | safe/read | Hand the rest of this task to another swarm worker whose role or tools fit it better. You stop when you call this: the worker you name continues the task with what you pass in context, and its answer becomes the result. Call it on its own, not together with other tools. |
Related tool modules (kazma_core/tools/)

Manifest-only coding skills
Section titled “Manifest-only coding skills”Some native folders ship manifests without a tools map (prompt/workflow skills): code-review, fix-lint, refactor-file, write-tests. They appear in the hub/skills UI but do not register discrete tool functions like the rows above.
MCP tools
Section titled “MCP tools”MCP servers configured under mcp.servers in kazma.yaml contribute tools at runtime. Classification:
- Name patterns containing write/exec/delete → danger
- read/list/get → often safe
- Unknown → danger (fail-closed)
- Production may force HITL for non-allowlisted MCP tools
See Skills, MCP & Tools.
